For the Creatives is a rotating gallery and art show that has appeared in Chicago and California and is now preparing for a showcase in Sacramento. It will be the sixth event curated by founder and curator Jacolyn Carrasco. Featuring a series of artists on display, the event will take place at Sol Collective all weekend, beginning tomorrow and ending at 6:00pm on Sunday. I spoke with Carrasco about the event, the artists involved, and what she has planned for the rest of the year.
Hey, how’s it going? Can you describe your surroundings right now?
Currently in the studio with my best friends & favorite artists.. Xack Leard, trav & Cognescere. We've got a gallery coming up so it's total madness over here but I like it like that. They're working on a huge collaboration piece so there's paint and art everywhere. A real beautiful energy in the room. We're all working.. we're all really excited.
For anyone unfamiliar reading this, explain yourself in a few sentences. Icebreaker shit.
I'm Juicy Jackie. Art and music lover extaordinaire. I was born & raised in the most amazing city in the world: Chicago, IL. I'm currently residing in Sacramento, CA. I always told everyone when I was younger I would live in California, so I made lil Jackie's dream come true.
I put together an art collective called For The Creatives. A lot of people gave me shit for the name...telling me I should take more time and rename it. Why? What for? This is exactly what it is. For The Creatives...for the people...for the artists. I'm real big about supporting people. I think that's so important. For The Creatives is a support system for artists. It's freedom, it's art.
For The Creatives is the most fulfilling thing I feel l've done with my life so far. I'm so proud of what we've done & what we have yet to do.
What's a normal week look like for you?
I spend a lot of time pulling out my hair thinking.. researching.. plotting on anything regarding For The Creatives. It drives me crazy, I love it. I watch my boyfriend make art (@xackleard_) his process/work is wild & intriguing. Lately we've had our homies Trav & Cognescere over a lot to work on our gallery which is rapidly approaching! I like looking at artists online...reading interviews...looking @ their work...websites...tweets...Instagram's explore page...Tumblr...I like to show artists love; they don't get enough of it. I also find a lot of inspiration in their work...I like to tell them what I feel and what I see. I also just started watching The Sopranos again and I just can't stop watching. I try to always read, reading is really so beautiful to me.
This interview is part of a series of first time interviewers who have a story to tell. So, what’s your story? You can answer this as precisely or as abstractly as you like.
I can tell you about all the shitty shit that has happened to me and all the good stuff that's made up for it
But it all comes down to this..
I feel blessed to live this life & even have a story to tell. I was raised to always appreciate my surroundings and be thankful for what I've got and at the end of the day...that's what my story ends with...how much I appreciated this life...how thankful I was to live it.
What’s 2017 looking like for you?
Shows...shows...and more shows. Connecting with many more artists...exploring art & the world more. Learning, growing, and manifesting my thoughts. Meeting more people & hearing their stories as well. I'm excited. I'm really proud of what we've built so far.
What have you been listening to recently?
I've been listening to The Strokes for almost 20 years it feels like. I love Ravyn Lenae's "Moon Shoes" Ep. I'm constantly looking for new music...so I let SoundCloud do its thing a lot of the time. In the studio the guys stay playing their own music and I don't mind much because their music taste isn't so bad...
